Garden Tips for a Floral February

February is a great month to prep for a fabulous floral display in your garden.

Flowering plants require attention even when they’re not in bloom and these small jobs can ensure you have beautiful displays for the year to come.

  • Divide large clumps of snowdrops after flowering and replant to start new patches for next year.

  • Plant containers and borders with hardy spring bedding plants such as wallflowers and primroses.

  • Prune the side shoots of your wisteria to three buds from the base to encourage flowers in the spring.

  • Prune buddleia hard to the base to keep it to a reasonable size.

  • Sow summer bedding plants and annuals in the greenhouse such as cosmos, dahlias, and sweet peas.

It’s worth keeping on top of general garden maintenance jobs over winter to make life easier in the warmer months..

  • Clean and service your mower, ready for use in the spring.

  • Spread compost or manure over beds and fork it in.

  • Clear plant debris from ponds and margins.

  • Firm back any plants and trees that may have been lifted by strong winds or frost.
