If you are able to get outside during daylight hours, there are plenty of gardening jobs you can do in January to help pass the time!

  • Clear leaf litter away from smaller plants and alpines to ensure they don’t become smothered.

  • Plant winter flowering plants such as snowdrops and hellebores to establish new patches for the coming years.

  • Plant bare root roses, hedging and ornamental trees, providing the ground is not too frozen.

  • Deadhead winter bedding plants and remove any foliage affected by mildew or rot.

  • Check any stored bulbs/tubers for rot.

  • Ensure bird baths are topped up with fresh water daily and ice is melted after a frost.

  • Clean and re-fill bird feeders regularly using high energy bird foods.

  • Install new bird boxes before the new nesting season begins.
